Authorities in Cleveland are investigating the discovery of two young half-sisters buried inside suitcases found on the city's east side, with their mother, Aliyah Henderson, 28, charged Thursday with two counts of aggravated murder. The bodies were located Monday in the Collinwood neighborhood after a dog walker alerted police to suspicious activity; DNA testing and medical examiner confirmation identified the victims as Mila Chatman, who would have been 8 years old, and Amor Wilson, 10 years old. The suitcases containing the remains were discovered approximately 25 feet apart near Ginn Academy in Cleveland's South Collinwood neighborhood, according to a police case report. Mila Chatman's father, DeShaun Chatman, revealed that he had been seeking custody of his daughter for five years before investigators informed him late Wednesday of her death. Chatman stated that despite repeatedly requesting emergency custody and attempting to locate the girls through a child welfare agency, his efforts failed because authorities did not know where they were living. He noted that Mila had lived within view of the site where their bodies were found but was unable to save them. His statements describe Mila as a happy-go-lucky 8-year-old whose favorite color was pink and who considered herself a princess, based on photos provided from when she was 3 years old in February 2020. Henderson's phone numbers were no longer linked to her, and it remained unclear whether she was represented by a lawyer as of Thursday. Police detained Henderson Wednesday evening after detectives completed initial interviews and examined evidence. Authorities confirmed that a living child, seemingly in good health, was found inside a house searched by investigators and placed in the custody of the Department of Children and Family Services. Cleveland Police Chief Dorothy Todd expressed deep sadness over the incident, calling it a "terrible, tragic situation," while noting that authorities have not yet told Chatman how the girls died.
